5 Healthy Foods that Improve Dental Health

Do you get excited when you hear of soft drinks, chocolates, cookies, and pastries? Even the sound of these will make you want to nip down to the nearest grocery store for a snack. But do you know that poor nutrition is also the leading cause of severe dental health?

Most people love sugar too much, and unfortunately, most of the delicious snacks contain a lot of sugar. Sugar is the main culprit of tooth decays for children and teeth loss for adults. When you eat a lot of sugar, this invites bad bacteria to settle in the mouth. When there are more bacteria in the mouth, it spikes up the acidity levels.

When the acidity levels go out of control, it slowly breaks the outer layer of the teeth (enamel). Once the enamel is damaged, more cavities are formed which in turn, leads to tooth decay. That means, changing the way we eat and replacing unhealthy sugar-filled snacks with healthier options can impact our oral health positively.

Top Healthy Foods that Improve Dental Health

  1. Seeds

Calcium plays a vital role in keeping our dental health in check. It is responsible for maintaining the bones in our jaw healthy. If our jaw bones are in tiptop condition, this creates a sturdy foundation for our teeth.

Seeds may look like specks, but they’re considered as nutritional powerhouses. Some have a very high calcium content such as sesame, poppy, and chia seeds. In one tablespoon which contains about nine grams of poppy seeds, there is around 126 mg of calcium. However, you have to be careful when having too many seeds as they contain a lot of calories. For example, an ounce of chia seeds contains about 140 calories.

  1. Yogurt

Another healthy food that improves our dental health is yogurt. They’re not only delicious snacks, but they’re also rich in calcium, protein, and probiotics. Probiotics are the good bacteria our body needs that fight off the harmful bacteria that cause cavities. When choosing your yogurt, always make sure to do away with flavored ones. Greek yogurt is one of the healthiest types of yogurt which not only takes care of your oral health but also keeps your digestive tract healthy.

  1. Beans and Lentils

Beans and lentils don’t only have high calcium content, but they’re also rich in fiber and other micronutrients such as iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium, and folate. Some varieties have a higher calcium content than others like winged beans for example. One cup or winged beans (172 grams) has about 244 mg of calcium.

  1. Sardines and Salmon

Fatty fish such as sardines and salmon contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids, along with protein, are essential for their anti-inflammatory properties. They have been linked to mitigating patients with periodontal diseases too. There are about 2 grams of omega-3 per 100 grams of sardines and about 2.3 grams per 100 grams of salmon.

  1. Raw Carrots

It’s not all about the nutritional benefits of healthy foods; sometimes chewing can also keep your dental health in excellent condition. Raw carrots are a great and healthy way of producing more saliva through chewing. Increased saliva flow reduces the harmful bacteria in the mouth, and it also washes off the food particles stuck in between our teeth.
