You turned fifty last year and got even more fabulous. How do you stay in such incredible shape?
Consistency!! I have been doing squats for over 30 years lol. I just try to make good choices, eat well but I always have a little bit of what I like.
You have such a positive body image. A lot of us could learn a thing or two from you. What would you say to someone reading this who struggles with their body image?
I struggle with my body image, it’s natural to, and we are so bombarded with impossible perfect images it is hard to be happy in your own skin. The reality is I try & let it go, no one cares whether I have cellulite or a pot belly, in the big picture it is nothing & I try to just enjoy & be grateful for the blessings I have.
So that’s what I would say, think about the things you like about yourself, rather than the negatives. Also when I hit 50 I thought I was going to just say YES to many things I would not normally do.. like the chilli shots….
We at Those London Chicks consider you beautiful inside and out. Describe your skincare routine?
I always remove my make-up at night, if I am lucky my brilliant friend Sarah Chapman has sent me some of her amazing ultimate cleanse, and I will use that & then I also adore her overnight facial, it is an amazing night oil which smells divine. I also use Atsas olive oil on my skin as a night oil, it is a high phenolic olive oil & so good for you both eaten & applied.
“Kindness, that is what beauty is…”
What are your top 3 can’t live without products?
So they would be Skinesis ultimate cleanse, Atsas olive oil & mascara.
Who are your beauty inspirations and why?
I do love old style glamour so icons like Gina Lollobrigida & Sophia Loren are who I adore. There is just something about that real Hollywood glamour that I love.
You are no stranger to the being in the public eye. Do you feel there is a pressure for women to look a certain way? If so how do you deal with it?
I think it is very hard for women as people troll you & my younger self would have been so hurt by the comments & unkindness, but now I am 50 I find it hilarious, I just don’t care what mean people say, I think it is reflection on them, not me, I would never dream of taking time out of my life to write something mean about another person, so I blow a big fat metaphorical raspberry to them.
You have an incredible and distinctive sense of style. It’s very vintage, colourful, feminine, bold …50’s siren. Are you secretly “a track suit and trainers” chick in private?
Yep!! Don’t tell anyone, but I love coming in from being dresses up, getting my bra off & onesie one!! Does it make it glam if it’s an animal print one??
What’s in your make-up bag?
EVERYTHING!!! Moisturizer, powder, cover up, brow pencil, eye pencil mascara, cream blusher lip liner & lip stick.
You attend many a red-carpet event. What would say is your “go to” look?
Always a black off the shoulder dress & either hair up or big hair & red lips.
Have you had any hair or beauty disasters that you care to share? Go on, pray tell?
Well in the 80’s & 90’s I was so tanned I looked like a leather armchair, and what was that thing we did then with a really dark lip-liner & light lipstick??
You’ve recently published the brilliant book The Secret of Spice. For those who may not know, what is the book about?
The first half of it is a glossary about spices, well my favourite 30 spices, what they are, where they come from, how to use them & why they are good for you.
How did you come up with the idea?
A few years ago I was suffering with chronic back pain & all the doctors could offer me was a cortisone injection which I really didn’t like the idea of, a friend of mine told me about using Turmeric, so I tried it & it really worked. So I thought if turmeric can do that what can other spices do to aid me so I started researching it all & it really is AMAZING how much you can aid your life with the micro nutrients you get from spices & herbs.
You seem to fit an awful lot into your work life. What do you do for downtime?
I love a movie in my onesie & a cup of tea, though I also love going out to eat with my whole family, all around a table shouting to be heard.
Lastly, what does ‘beauty’ mean to you?
Kindness, that is what beauty is, yes it’s nice to look nice on the outside but if you are not nice on the inside, what is the point….
Thank you so much Tonia!
