Chicks Netflix Review of LOVE season 1

A Netflix original series by Judd Apatow (40 year old virgin, Knocked Up, This is 40, The Pineapple Express) a boy meets girl story based in LA. I don’t know why but something about the trailer made me cautious, I wasn’t sure and I stayed away from the show for a while…….until a few days ago. Errr, like it was TOTALLY frikkin awesome! Ok, no one in the show speaks like that.

netflix original series LOVE

The series is sublime. Truly. Excruciatingly awkward comedy, perfectly cast with Gillian Jacobs as the alcohol, drug, sex and love addict Mickey Dobbs (and my new girl crush) a too cool for school, early thirty something, described as a ‘Nazi Princess’ by Andy Dick, yep, an entire episode is dedicated to him and her love interest played by Paul Rust, Gus Cruikshank, the Alpha Geek (is that a thing? I made that up) the overly nice guy, who isn’t nice at all, just passive. The two play so brilliantly together on screen. The story allows you to fall in love with each character independently as well as together, both characters have an interest in the other but it is not plain sailing for these two lovebirds. The characters are so well observed, you’d be hard pressed to not to empathise with them. There are also very strong performances from Claudia O’Doherty (The Inbtweeners, Inside Amy Schumer) the glassy eyed, seemingly ditzy Aussie new flatmate/ wannabe best friend to Micky. Tracie Thoms (The Devil Wears Prada, Deathproof, Looper) is formidable as head writer of TV Series Witchita and Gus’ feisty boss – Gus is actually a tutor to the actors in the hit series, who all show Gus little to no respect and then there is Lisa Apatow, who shines as Arya, the biggest 12 year old diva in training and star of the hit show and an absolute joy to watch.
Season two cannot come soon enough. A touching and well-rounded drama, with some serious laugh out loud moments.
